Thomson Prison Relocation Page
For Families Considering a Move Due to Employment with the Prison
If you and your family are planning to relocate due to employment with the Thomson Prison, we hope you will consider Eastland CUSD #308. Eastland is a consolidated district just 22 miles northeast of Thomson, IL. Our district serves the communities of Lanark, Shannon and Lake Carroll, and their surrounding rural routes. 645 students attend grades Pre-K – 12th. To learn more about our district, browse through our “Choose Eastland” brochure.
Since 2006, Eastland Boards of Education have developed and revised three iterations of a Strategic Plan. This plan provides the framework for improvement in the areas of curriculum/instruction, co- and extra-curricular activities, finances, facilities, technology, and transportation. Building teams set annual goals aligned to the targets in this plan. The Board and all stakeholders are briefed continuously on progress made toward building and district targets through regular reports, the annual School Report Card, and the 5Essentials Survey of Learning Conditions for Eastland Elementary and Eastland Jr/Sr High Schools.
Eastland is entering our sixth year as a 1:1 district: every student in grades K-12 has access to a personal laptop or tablet device. Students in grades 4-12 take these devices home with them every day. Teachers receive intensive professional development and embedded support from a district technology director and assistant director as well as a media specialist. Student engagement is measured and monitored to ensure that technology is used to foster the project-based work and student learning conversations characteristic of higher level learning. We view reliable and continuous access to online content and programs, facilitated by a skilled professional, as a dynamic teaching and learning tool – a means to an end, rather than an end itself.
In fact, we see all of the essential functions of the school – the safe transport and housing of students in clean and modern facilities, the provision of healthy breakfasts and lunches, reliable access to online content and programming, instruction facilitated by highly effective and well-trained teachers, and opportunities to participate in a variety of quality co- and extra-curricular programs – as fundamental to learning. It is this comprehensive approach that allows us to say with all sincerity, “welcome to Eastland, where Learning is Paramount.”
